The 4th Continental Light Dragoons, also known as Sheldon's Horse, were a cavalry regiment in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The unit was raised in 1776 by Colonel Elisha Sheldon and consisted of 294 officers and men.
The regiment saw action in many of the major battles of the war, including Saratoga, Monmouth, and Yorktown. They were particularly noted for their brave charge at the Battle of Trenton, where they helped to secure a crucial victory for the Continental Army.
The 4th Continental Light Dragoons received high praise for their discipline, skill, and bravery in battle. They were also known for their distinctive black and red uniforms, which made them easily identifiable on the battlefield.
After the war, the regiment was disbanded and many of its members went on to become prominent figures in early American society. Colonel Sheldon himself became a respected politician and businessman, and the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, England is named after him.
